Baby Killed by “Very Violent” Brain Injury

Police describe the death of a six-month-old baby Ngaruawahia girl as a “very violent” incident. The girl died from a traumatic brain injury(TBI), the post mortem report reveals.

The child had been admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) after suffering non-accidental injuries.

The small baby died at Starship Hospital last Thursday after life support was turned off, a doctor sadly states.

A Senior Detective working the case said the post mortem report results illustrated the injuries the poor child received. “I would stress at this stage that the post mortem results are only provisional, but they give us some idea as to what sort of injuries she suffered during what was obviously a very violent death.”

The baby had been living with her 21-year-old mother at a house in Ngaruawahia. The mother’s 17-year-old brother and 21-year-old fiancé also resided there.

The two men were interviewed by police shortly after the baby was taken to the hospital. No arrests had been made. Police investigating her death are still waiting on final results.

The Senior Detective said that the investigation was progressing well, but that they still needed more information to ascertain how the child died. “An innocent, 6-month-old baby is dead. She has died at the hands of another, and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that someone is held accountable for her death.”

A study agrees and cannot express his concerns enough. The human brain has amazing healing abilities, but some injuries are just too severe to recover from. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) occur when a sudden impact causes damage to the brain, either by blunt force against the head or by puncturing the skull. TBI is the leading cause of death and disability in children and adults 1-year-old to 44-years-old.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Long Island and Manhattan reported that 11% of all TBIs are caused by attacks from others. Certainly in the case of this child, the cause is an attack, an unfair, uneven attack of a supposedly responsible adult on a helpless child.
